After months of courtroom back-and-forth, the Federal Government has finally closed its case against Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The government’s legal team, led by senior lawyer Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), wrapped up its side of the trial on Thursday after presenting its fifth and final witness, identified in court only as “EEE” for security reasons.
The witness was cross-examined by Kanu’s counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu, before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Mr Awomolo told the court that the government had presented enough material, especially the broadcasts linked to Kanu’s alleged activities, to justify ending its case.
“I, therefore, close the case,” he declared.
But the defence is not letting things slide. Lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), immediately signalled that the defence team will be filing a no-case submission, essentially arguing that the prosecution’s evidence is too weak to warrant continuing the trial.
Aloy Ejimakor, another lawyer on Kanu’s team, he confirmed the development in a tweet on Thursday.
“Today, the Federal Republic of Nigeria closed its case against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” he stated. “The Court granted the defence 14 days to file its written address on a no-case submission and 14 days to the prosecution to respond.”
Justice Omotosho has adjourned the matter to 18 July to allow both sides time to file their written addresses.
