The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Benue State has moved corps members out of troubled spots following recent violence, assuring parents that their children are safe and well cared for.
Speaking in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area, the State Coordinator, Mrs Veronica Garba, told the News Agency of Nigeria that corps members stationed in Yelewata and Daudu were quickly evacuated to Makurdi once the violence broke out.
“We do not joke with the safety of our corps members because we take them as our children,” Garba said. “So as soon as we heard about the crisis, we contacted the Commissioner of Police who detailed his officers to help us evacuate our corps members.”
According to her, the NYSC management immediately swung into action after receiving reports of the crisis, working with the police to ensure a safe and smooth evacuation. She added that all corps members were accounted for after a headcount was conducted.
“We then did our head count and none was missing, so we arranged with the heads of all the family houses and got them settled in Makurdi for now, pending when the situation will improve,” she explained.
The relocated corps members are currently being housed in NYSC “family houses” – including facilities run by the Nigeria Corpers Christian Fellowship (NCCF), National Association of Catholic Corps Members (NACC), and Muslim Corpers Association of Nigeria (MCAN).
Mrs Garba called on parents and guardians to remain calm, assuring them that there was no cause for alarm.
“I am sure that the parents of our corps members have heard that all the security chiefs have moved to Benue, so they have no reason to fear,” she said.
“Above all, God, who is the safest security, is everywhere; He is with your children too.”
This comes after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Makurdi on Wednesday, where he met with stakeholders and directed security agencies to restore peace and bring those responsible for the deadly attacks to justice.
