Aare Taoheed Adebayo Taiwo, the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) chairmanship candidate in the Saturday, July 12, local government election in Lagos State, has hailed the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for the peaceful conduct of the election.
Taiwo disclosed on Saturday at the close of voting that the election was peaceful, credible, and seamless.
The APC candidate stated that in spite of the smooth exercise, there could still be room for improvement since there’s no election that is 100 percent perfect, even in advanced communities.
“The exercise has been peaceful, credible, and seamless,” Taiwo said.
The APC chieftain, while reacting to claims about low voter turnout, said, “It depends on the perspective that you’re looking at it. I’m speaking about what I experienced firsthand in my polling unit. Though I wasn’t fortunate enough to move around. I can only tell you what happened in my polling unit.
“So far, the turnout has been impressive. People came out, voted for candidates of their choice.”
On the issue of late arrival of election materials, he said, “I don’t know the polling units that you’re speaking about. In the polling unit where I voted, they came around 9am. It’s not as if it was all Uhuru, a few breaches here and there, but in all, the election has been smooth.”
While speaking on his immediate priority if elected, he said, “We have a seven-point cardinal manifesto which basically is on infrastructural renewal, improving our healthcare sector. Improve our security network, and provide adequate security for lives and property. We’ll embark on massive infrastructural renewal. If you look around, we have less than 48 percent of tarred roads in Ejigbo. What it speaks to is that our people would want us to do more on infrastructure, in particular, road infrastructure.
During our electioneering campaign, we visited the coalition of the CDCs. Our people have been yearning for basic infrastructure.”
Speaking on possible areas of improvement in future elections, Taiwo said, “Even in the international community, no election is 100 percent perfect. Elections come with their challenges. They come with their own special issues, but in terms of logistics, perhaps LASIEC can do more. There should be room for further improvement. Get to the polling units earlier than what has been observed today. Maybe 6 or 7 am. But at the end of the day, we need to know that people have done their best, as we hope for a better process.”
Recall that local government elections took place in Lagos State on Saturday, July 12, in the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) across the state.
