NewsNigeriaNSCDC Trains 250 Personnel In Sign Language

No fewer than 250 personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) FCT Command have been trained in basic sign language to enhance intelligence gathering and promote inclusivity as part of measures to tackle the evolving security challenges across the territory.

The FCT NSCDC Commandant, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, said the five-week training, conducted in partnership with Deaf-in-Tech, equips officers with vital communication skills to bridge the gap between security personnel and the deaf community across all six Area Councils of the FCT.

Odumosu emphasized that the initiative aligns with the Corps’ broader strategy to build a professional, resilient, and inclusive security force capable of addressing the diverse needs of society.

“By learning sign language, our officers are now equipped to hear the unheard and protect the unseen,” he stated, adding that inclusion is not just a value but a necessity in modern security operations.

In his remarks, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Chief Ayuba Burkin Gufwan, lauded NSCDC for taking the lead in inclusive security training.

He urged the Corps to mainstream sign language across all commands and called for the employment of trained deaf individuals, in line with the 5% disability employment quota mandated by law.
