In July 2025, Nigeria’s average daily crude oil production rose to 1.507 million barrels per day (bpd), a modest increase from June’s 1.505 million bpd, according to OPEC’s latest Monthly Oil Market Report.
This surpasses the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries’ (OPEC) quota for the third time this year.
OPEC emphasised that these figures were obtained via direct communication with Nigerian authorities, boosting the country’s status as Africa’s leading oil producer, ahead of Algeria, which recorded 1.37 million bpd .
Beyond OPEC’s assessment, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), speaking at an energy industry gathering, announced that the nation’s peak oil production in July exceeded 1.8 million bpd, with the average production hovering at 1.78 million bpd.
“We are glad to report that we crossed the 1.8 MMBOPD mark on peak production last month, with average production hovering at 1.78 MMBOPD,” said Gbenga Komolafe, Chief Executive of the NUPRC.
Komolafe attributed the increase to the commission’s ‘Project 1 MMBOPD Incremental initiative’, which has produced “modest gains” through a multi-stakeholder collaborative approach.
He further outlined measures such as optimising the Maximum Efficient Rate (MER) framework, improved produced water management, and carefully timed operational shutdowns and turnaround maintenance to ensure minimal production disruptions.
