The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Prof. Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University Gusau has declared the Kaura Namoda South State Constituency by-election in Zamfara State inconclusive.
Prof. Sa’adu said the decision followed the cancellation of results from polling units in Sakajiki and Kambarawa wards.
The Returning Officer explained that the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 7,001 votes while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) scored 5,339, leaving a margin of 1,662 votes.
According to him, the margin was less than the total number of 3,265 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected in the affected polling units, making it impossible to declare a winner.
Sa’adu cited Sections 24 (2 & 3), 47 (3), and 51 (2) of the Electoral Act 2022 to justify its decision.
He said Sakajiki Ward had two polling units with 1,357 registered voters and 1,298 PVCs collected, while Kambarawa Ward had three polling units with 4,088 registered voters and 1,964 PVCs collected.
The Returning Officer stressed that the election would remain inconclusive until supplementary polls are conducted in the five affected polling units.
INEC is expected to announce a new date for the rerun election in the coming days.
