69% of Registrants Are Youths
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that no fewer than 69,376 Nigerians completed their online pre-registration for voter’s cards within the first seven hours of the exercise on Monday.
The Commission said the registration portal, which went live at 8:30 a.m. on 18th August 2025, recorded impressive traffic from across the country, with slightly more female registrants than males.
According to INEC, of the total figure, 35,573 (51.3 per cent) were women, while 33,803 (48.7 per cent) were men. A breakdown further revealed that young people between the ages of 18 and 34 accounted for 48,033, or 69.2 per cent, of the total figure.
“The registration portal went live at 8:30 a.m., but by 3:30 p.m., just seven hours later, as many as 69,376 Nigerians pre-registered online,” said Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee.
The electoral body further announced that in-person registration will begin on Monday, 25th August 2025, at all its 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide. The exercise will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekdays.
Olumekun explained that the in-person registration will enable those who prefer the physical option to register, while also allowing those who pre-registered online to complete their registration at designated centres.
“The two options will proceed simultaneously throughout the duration of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) as indicated in the schedule earlier released by the Commission,” he said.
The Commission assured Nigerians that weekly updates of the CVR exercise would be released, with detailed breakdowns by State, gender, age, occupation, and disability.
INEC also reminded citizens that voter registration is only open to Nigerian citizens who are 18 years and above and who have not previously registered. The Commission warned that “double or multiple registration is a violation of the law.”
However, transfers of voter records within and across States, as well as the replacement of lost or damaged voter cards, are permitted during the exercise.
“The portal is available 24 hours every day of the week at https://cvr.inecnigeria.org,” Olumekun said.
