President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a policy granting lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from agencies under the Federal Ministry of Interior.
The development was announced today during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
According to a statement issued by DCF P.O. Abraham, Head of Corporate Services at the Federal Fire Service, “In recognition of the welfare of senior officers, the minister announced that any officer retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller/Comptroller/Commandant-General will now receive lifetime salary benefits, a policy graciously approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
Dr Tunji-Ojo explained that this measure forms part of broader reforms aimed at ensuring that “those who serve the country with distinction do not retire into poverty.”
He noted that the welfare of personnel remains a central concern of the Interior Ministry’s agenda.
Significantly, the Minister said his administration has cleared a persistent backlog of promotions, elevating more than 50,000 officers over the past two years.
“We have placed capacity and performance at the centre of officers’ progression,” he said, affirming a shift to merit-based advancement in future promotions.
Further reforms include the development of new training manuals to standardise and enhance capacity building across the ministry’s agencies and the commencement of construction on a world-class Fire Academy, designed to rival leading international institutions such as the Arizona Fire Academy.
Others are a renewed focus on mental health and welfare, signalling a progressive recognition of the psychological well-being of personnel and a directive to the Federal Fire Service to pursue private sector partnerships, aimed at modernising firefighting operations, improving service delivery, and bolstering infrastructural development in Nigeria.
Dr Tunji-Ojo expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support. He reiterated that all agencies under the ministry are actively benefiting from the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
