The political crisis has forced some 18 local government chairmen in Edo State who were in acting capacity either impeached or forced to resign.
The acting chairmen, who were elected in 2023 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during former Governor Godwin Obaseki’s tenure, assumed office after defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the impeachment of elected chairmen who refused to defect.
Although a court later overturned the impeachment, the affected chairmen never returned to office.
The situation came after Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) presented Certificates of Return to 63 newly elected councillors on Monday, September 22, 2025.
These councillors had won a by-election held the previous Saturday.
Reports show that the councillors in several local government areas have signed impeachment notices against acting chairmen before returning to their offices.
In Esan West, the acting chairman, Godsent Agboibo, resigned on the same day to avoid possible removal, citing recent events as the reason for his decision.
In Estako East, councillors signed an impeachment notice for acting chairman Solomon Ogumah, while thugs reportedly took control of the local government secretariat in Okpella.
Similarly, in Uhunmwode, nine councillors removed acting chairman Osas Iradia Benjamin, citing abuse of office, financial mismanagement, and disobedience to authorities as reasons for his dismissal.
But in Ovia South West, Acting Chairman Charles Edobor, who hailed from the same area as Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, had remained in office without impeachment or resignation.
