The Federal Government has officially cancelled the Independence Anniversary parade that was to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day on Wednesday, 1 October.
The announcement was made in a statement by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
Imohiosen did not offer a specific reason for the decision but emphasised that the cancellation will “in no way be a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary.”
He assured that all other programmes scheduled for the Independence celebrations would still go ahead.
“The Government deeply regrets any inconvenience caused by this cancellation,” the statement read.
The government also appealed to Nigerians, the diplomatic community, and invited guests to continue supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda.
According to the statement, “The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm.”
An earlier version of the celebration theme had been “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,” with the parade being one among the array of activities planned.
While the parade will no longer take place, the federal government has already declared 1 October a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s independence.
