President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of new Service Chiefs in what the Presidency described as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture.
A statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, announced the new appointments.
According to the statement, General Olufemi Oluyede has been appointed as the new Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa.
Major-General W. Shaibu is now the Chief of Army Staff, while Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke assumes office as the Chief of Air Staff. Rear Admiral I. Abbas has been named the new Chief of Naval Staff.
The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retains his position.
President Tinubu, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expressed appreciation to the outgoing Service Chiefs for their “patriotic service and dedicated leadership.”
The President also urged the new military leaders to uphold the highest standards of discipline and cooperation within the armed forces.
“The President charges the newly appointed Service Chiefs to justify the confidence reposed in them to further enhance the professionalism, vigilance, and comradeship that define the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” the statement read.
The reshuffle comes amid rising concerns about insecurity in several parts of the country, with ongoing military operations against insurgents, bandits, and other violent groups.
All appointments, according to the statement, take immediate effect.
