The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has been found guilty of terrorism offenses by the Federal High Court in Abuja after 10 years of legal battle between Nnamdi Kanu and the Nigerian government.
Justice James Omotosho, while announcing Kanu’s conviction in a lengthy judgment delivered on Thursday, said: “It is clear from the evidence that the defendant committed a terrorism act.
“The defendant is convicted in respect of court one.”
The Court also found IPOB leader guilty of the murder of former presidential aide, Barrister Ahmed Ali Gulak.
Justice Omotosho ruled that the Federal Government successfully proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Kanu is the leader of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the militia group the court held responsible for the killing.
The judge said: “The evidence presented before the court proves beyond a reasonable doubt that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is the leader of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), which the court holds was responsible for the killing of Mr. Gulak.”
Late Barrister Ahmed Ali Gulak, former Speaker of the Adamawa House of Assembly and ex-Special Adviser on Political Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan was assassinated by gunmen on May 30, 2021, in Owerri, Imo State, while on official engagement in the state.
Federal High Court to deliver verdict in Nnamdi Kanu’s absence.
However, Kanu had insisted before he was escorted out of the court for unruly behaviour, that no judgment must be delivered until he was shown the law he breached.
As of the time of filing this report, Justice Omotosho is still giving his judgment on other counts, including the declaration of sit-at-home in the South-East region of Nigeria
Nnamdi Kanu was first arrested in 2015 on charges of treason and was rearrested in 2021 in Kenya.
Recall that leader of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, Simon Ekpa, was sentenced to six years in jail in Finland for inciting violence in Nigeria.
