BusinessNewsNigeriaDangote Refinery Slashes Petrol Price to ₦699 per Litre, Market Responds

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has again cut the price of petrol at its gantry, lowering the ex-depot rate from ₦828 to ₦699 per litre. The reduction took effect on 11 December 2025.

This is the refinery’s 20th price adjustment this year as it continues to respond to market dynamics. The refinery’s petrol benchmark was reduced by ₦129 per litre, a decrease of about 15.58 per cent.

The reduction follows remarks by Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Industries Limited and the refinery, during a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu on 6 December 2025.

After the meeting, Dangote reiterated the refinery’s commitment to competitive pricing, despite global volatility and ongoing fuel smuggling.

Dangote said, “Prices are going down. The reason why prices have to go down is that we have to also compete with imports.”

He noted that smuggling, although slightly reduced, remains a factor because petrol sells for much more in neighbouring countries.

According to him, “But luckily for us now, the smuggling has reduced, not totally. There is still quite a lot of smuggling because the price we have in Nigeria is about 55 per cent lower than the price of our neighbouring countries.”

Dangote also emphasized that refined products, including petrol and diesel, would continue to be sold at reasonable prices. “Petroleum products (diesel and petrol) will continue to be sold in the market at a very reasonable price.”

On the refinery’s long-term outlook, he said: “We are not here to make our $20 billion back quickly; it’s a long-term investment.”
