Political parties under the umbrella of the Forum of National Chairmen of Political Parties (NCPP) have announced plans to hold a nationwide rally on January 10, 2026, in support of the federal government’s new tax regime.
In a joint communique issued after an extensive consultative meeting on Thursday, leaders of the NCPP described the tax reforms as a “far-reaching economic policy” that transcends partisan politics and advances the national interest.
The initiative comes as the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and related tax laws took effect on 1 January 2026, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s insistence that the reforms would proceed as planned despite calls for delay and public controversy over certain provisions.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, NCPP chairmen, led by Uche Nnadi, said the rally would provide a platform for peaceful, inclusive, and non-partisan advocacy to educate Nigerians on the long-term benefits of the tax regime.
“This new tax regime by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is not a political agenda of any single party or administration; it is a national economic necessity whose benefits will be felt across generations. Its successful implementation is crucial to stabilising our economy and positioning Nigeria on a sustainable growth path,” the parties said.
According to the NCPP, the reforms are designed to broaden the revenue base, reduce dependence on borrowing, strengthen fiscal discipline, and enhance governmental capacity at all levels to deliver essential infrastructure, social services, and economic opportunities for citizens.
Explaining the motive behind the January rally, NCPP leaders emphasised the importance of fostering national unity and informed dialogue around the reforms.
“Our objective is to engage Nigerians constructively and honestly. While we recognise that tax reforms can be challenging, we believe that informed dialogue and national unity are the most effective tools for navigating this transition,” the statement added.
The parties also strongly rejected allegations that anti-democratic actors are seeking to exploit the new tax regime to incite unrest or spread misinformation.
“We unequivocally dissociate ourselves from any plot by anti-democratic elements to incite unrest or sabotage this reform. Any attempt to weaponise the tax regime for political chaos is unacceptable and constitutes a direct threat to democratic stability and national cohesion,” they declared.
In their appeal to the public, the political leaders urged youths, labour groups, civil society organisations, market associations, and the organised private sector to approach the reforms with patience, patriotism, and a long-term perspective on national prosperity.
They also called on implementing agencies, including the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the newly established National Tax Policy Implementation Committee, to ensure transparency, fairness, and responsiveness in the rollout of the reforms, thereby building and maintaining public trust.
“For this reform to succeed, implementation must be transparent, equitable, and responsive to the concerns of ordinary Nigerians. Trust between government and the people is the foundation of sustainable reform,” the parties said.
The political leaders concluded by reaffirming their collective commitment to democracy, peace, and economic stability, stressing that unity around national reforms remains essential to Nigeria’s progress.
“Nigeria’s future depends on our ability to rise above partisan divisions and act in the national interest. The new tax regime represents such a moment, and we must not allow politics to undermine economic survival,” the NCPP concluded.
