The Kano State Government has been hit by a fresh wave of resignations following the exit of four members of the state executive council, including Mustapha Kwankwaso, son of former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Mustapha Kwankwaso resigned as Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development and as a member of the Kano State Executive Council, on Monday following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
In his statement, Mustapha said his decision was taken “with a heavy heart”, as he expressed appreciation to Governor Yusuf for the opportunity to serve the people of Kano State.
He thanked the Governor for the trust reposed in him and reflected on the lessons and experiences gained during his time in office.
“As I resign, I pray that the youth of Kano State will continue to receive the attention and support they deserve,” he said. “I hope for the best for our sports development programs and initiatives, and I am confident that they will flourish in the years to come.”
He also prayed for continued blessings on Kano State and wished the government and the people success going forward. Mustapha, however, did not state the specific reasons for his resignation.
Also on Monday, Yusuf Kofarmata, Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, also resigned from his position, citing dissatisfaction with the direction of the state government.
“I cannot continue to work under a government that has derailed from the ideology that brought it to power,” Kofarmata said.
In a related development, Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Umaru (rtd) resigned as Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services.
His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated 26 January 2026, addressed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf through the Secretary to the State Government.
In the letter, Umaru thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in him and recalled his appointment as Director General of the Special Services Directorate in June 2023, before his elevation to commissioner.
“Following the recent turn of events, I believe it is in the best interest of the state and the administration that I step aside from this role. This decision, though difficult, is made after careful consideration,” he stated.
The retired Air Force Officer said his service was guided by the principles of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, led by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, which he said emphasise justice, discipline and service to the people.
Nasiru Sule Garo, Commissioner for Special Duties, also tendered his resignation on Monday in a letter addressed to the governor through the Secretary to the State Government.
“I am deeply grateful for the trust and support extended to me during my tenure. Serving the people of Kano State has been an honour and a privilege, and I appreciate the opportunity to have contributed to the development of our state and to work alongside dedicated colleagues,” Garo said.
He added that he was committed to ensuring a smooth transition and would be available to assist with the handover.
