NewsGovernor Kefas Dolls Out N3 million Lifeline To Taraba State University

Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has approved the immediate release of 200 million naira for the payment of the backlog of salaries owed members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the Taraba State University.
According to a statement on Thursday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Yusuf Sanda, another 100 million naira will be provided each month starting from April until the backlog is cleared.
The statement said the governor approved it after visiting the institution to resolve the ongoing union strike.
The statement added that with this approval by the governor, it is “anticipated that the unions will call off the strike to allow academic activities to resume and in the interest of the students”.
The statement further said: “In a historic move to resolve the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU of Taraba State University, Governor Dr Agbu Kefas has approved the immediate release of 200 million naira, with a further 100 million naira to be provided each month starting from April until the backlog is cleared.
“The Governor made this decision during his visit to the institution on Thursday, 12 March 2026, to personally ensure a lasting resolution to the persistent strike at the university.
“To demonstrate his commitment to the agreement, Dr. Agbu Kefas, who is the visitor to the university, signed the documents for the payment of over three billion naira in the presence of the Chairman of ASUU, Dr. Mbave Joshua Garba, and other union leaders”.
Meanwhile, Chairman of ASUU of the University, Dr Mbave Joshua, said the Joint Action Committee of ASUU and NASU has immediately held a meeting after the Governor’s visit and deliberated on the issue.
He described the meeting as positive, but said they would still call another meeting to address certain grey areas.
“The meeting was positive, but there are some minor adjustments that the Congress wants to make. The management has accepted our terms, and we are almost there,” Mbave said.
