EntertainmentLifestyleNewsNigeriaSkit Maker ‘Governor Amuneke’ Speaks on Risks of Criticising Government Through Comedy

A Nigerian satirical skit maker, Kevin Chinedu Arua, popularly known for his online character Governor Amuneke, has opened up about the risks and pressure that come with using comedy to criticise governance and social issues in Nigeria.

The entertainer spoke during an appearance on Rubbin’ Minds on Channels Television, where he reflected on his journey as a comedian whose content often tackles political leadership and public accountability.

In a candid conversation, Arua said he stepped into political satire fully aware of the possible consequences.

”It’s a journey I knew the implications before I started. So my own belief system is that what will happen will happen,’ he said on Sunday.

The content creator noted that speaking through satire was a deliberate decision driven by personal conviction rather than mere entertainment.

“I don’t do my thing and get scared that this person will get offended and send people. I see threats, and people send me DMs that, whatever you do, this government will still be here till 2031,” he said.

Arua explained that from the very beginning, he understood that criticising authority through comedy could attract backlash. However, he believes that whatever the outcome, it is part of a larger destiny.

Drawing a parallel with biblical history, he said he accepts that outcomes are inevitable.

“Jesus knew he was going to be crucified before being crucified. Whatever will be my end will be my end,” he said, emphasising that fear cannot dictate his creative choices.

The skit maker also disclosed that his outspoken style has led to threats, including messages warning him to stop criticising government actions.

“One sent me a message that read ‘we know where you live. We will come after you.’ If you come after me, then what happens? It’s a waste of time to come after me,” he said.

Despite the intimidation, Arua maintained that such threats have not shaken his resolve, describing attempts to silence him as largely futile.

He also expressed disappointment in some public officeholders, arguing that many leaders appear disconnected from the daily realities of ordinary Nigerians.

Known for his widely shared political satire videos, Arua uses the fictional character ‘Governor Amuneke’ to portray the behaviour of politicians and expose what he sees as contradictions in governance across Nigeria and Africa.

His skits combine humour with social commentary, often mirroring real political situations and encouraging public debate about leadership and accountability.

Beyond comedy, the skit maker said he has recently launched an initiative highlighting local governments’ activities. According to him, the campaign draws attention to governance and development issues while maintaining a satirical tone that acknowledges positive efforts where they exist.

However, he admitted that activism is not something he necessarily enjoys.

“Activists are born, not self-made,” he said, noting that he would rather devote more time to exploring his creativity behind the camera than confronting societal issues.

Still, he believes remaining silent would weigh more heavily on his conscience than the risks associated with speaking out.

Reflecting on the realities of advocacy in Nigeria, he said individuals who challenge the system often find themselves standing alone when trouble arises.

“I don’t care about the repercussions, and I know how Nigerians are wired, no matter how you want to fight and want to be like Jesus, if anything happens, you will be left alone. I have envisaged all the possible scenarios,” he said.

“The worst you could do is put me somewhere, and I won’t speak,” he said, suggesting that his voice and convictions cannot easily be silenced.

Political satire has grown significantly on Nigeria’s digital platforms in recent years, with comedians and content creators increasingly using humour to engage younger audiences in conversations about governance, democracy, and accountability across the country.
