The Labour Party (LP) has announced that it has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the southern part of Nigeria.

The National Chairperson of the party, Nenadi Usman, made the declaration on Tuesday in Abuja during a meeting with party stakeholders.

Usman said the decision had already been concluded within the party structure and would guide the selection process ahead of the next general election.

“We have one certain decision that we have taken, and that is that we will certainly not field any aspirant from northern Nigeria. We have zoned the position to southern Nigeria,” she said. “So if any northerner comes now to want to contest elections, we certainly will not accept that.”

She, however, refused to disclose possible contenders for the ticket, stressing that the party would allow a competitive and democratic primary process to determine its candidate.

“As for who, I can’t tell you now because then it won’t be democratic anymore. Whoever the people like and vote for during the primaries… could be the candidate,” she said.

“We cannot go out there to beg people, please come and use the Labour Party to contest elections. It’s never done.”

The Labour Party, which rose to national prominence during the 2023 general elections, has been affected in recent years by internal leadership disputes and legal battles over control of its national structure.

The latest court ruling in one such dispute, according to Usman, went in favour of the current leadership.

“To God be the glory, the case was thrown out because it lacked merit,” she said, adding that the judge “stood on truth.”

On party administration, Usman disclosed that the leadership may review the dates for its forthcoming congresses, citing a surge in new members joining the party across the country.

She warned that proceeding with the earlier timetable could lead to the exclusion of eligible members.

“If we go ahead to stick to that date, to my mind, we are going to disenfranchise quite a number of people,” she said.

She also addressed security concerns within the party, revealing that a petition had been submitted to the police over an attack on one of its offices. She expressed confidence that those responsible would be prosecuted.

“I’m very, very sure they are going to make sure that they bring to book all those who had a hand in what happened to serve as a deterrent,” she said.

During the membership registration, Usman urged party members to embrace digital registration processes, noting that manual registration should be limited to areas with limited access to technology.

She said only members in remote communities without access to mobile devices should rely on non-digital methods, as the party moves to strengthen its database and internal organisation ahead of future elections.

The Labour Party (Nigeria) has recently been working to stabilise its internal structure following months of leadership tensions and competing claims within its national hierarchy, as it positions itself for a stronger showing in the 2027 general elections.
