Abba Kabir Yusuf has directed all political appointees and public servants who intend to contest the 2027 general elections to resign within seven days.
The directive, issued through a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Faruq Ibrahim, gives affected officials until 31 March 2026 to step down or retire from service.
Those affected include commissioners, special advisers, directors-general, managing directors, and various categories of aides.
“In line with the provisions of the Electoral Act and other applicable regulations governing the conduct of public officers, all political office holders who wish to contest in the forthcoming elections are hereby required to resign their appointments,” the statement read.
The government said the move is aimed at enforcing compliance with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act and maintaining neutrality within the public service.
“Accordingly, all public officers who are interested in contesting in the forthcoming general elections are required to resign or retire, as the case may be, on or before Tuesday, March 31, 2026,” Ibrahim stated.
The directive was circulated to key state institutions, including the Office of the Head of Civil Service, the Kano State House of Assembly, and the judiciary.
