At least one police officer and nine soldiers have been killed in an ambush by suspected gunmen in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, in one of the deadliest attacks on security forces in recent weeks.
The attack was in the Giro Masa community, where security operatives were reportedly responding to intelligence about armed men hiding in a construction company yard.
However, the team was ambushed en route, leading to multiple casualties. Two military vehicles were also set ablaze during the attack.
Governor Nasir Idris visited victims at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi, where the injured are receiving treatment.
Describing the attack as tragic, the Governor assured residents of government support for both the wounded and the families of the deceased.
“Everybody knows that the government of Kebbi does not play with security issues. We are here; we have seen things by ourselves. And we have directed the CMD of the hospital to ensure they do the needful for those who are receiving treatment,” he said.
“And at the same time, for those who lost their life, the government of Kebbi will do everything possible to assist the family. It is a great loss, and it is a very sad situation. But we have to accept what has happened in good faith.”
