HOUSTON, Texas — Texas Southern University’s (TSU) School of Communication is set to host its 44th Annual Media and Communication Conference (CommWeek 2026) from April 6–10, positioning the institution as a key voice in global conversations on media innovation and artificial intelligence.

The weeklong conference will bring together scholars, students, industry professionals, and civic leaders to examine emerging trends shaping journalism, entertainment, and digital communication. This year’s theme, “Beyond the Algorithm: Reimagining Media, Learning & Innovation with AI,” underscores the growing impact of artificial intelligence on media systems, storytelling practices, and audience engagement worldwide.

Participants will engage in a series of panels, workshops, and networking sessions exploring critical issues such as AI-driven content creation, ethical challenges in digital media, evolving business models, and the future of communication education. The conference also provides a platform for meaningful exchange between academia and industry, fostering innovation and collaboration.

According to Dr. Caldwell, “Communication Week represents more than a conference; it is a platform to showcase the excellence of our students and faculty while connecting with industry leaders and scholars shaping the future of communication.”

Speaking on the significance of the event, TSU’s Interim Dean of the School of Communication, Dr. Alan K. Caldwell, described CommWeek as a strategic initiative that strengthens the institution’s academic reputation and global engagement.

“Communication Week represents more than a conference; it is a platform to showcase the excellence of our students and faculty while connecting with industry leaders and scholars shaping the future of communication,” Caldwell said.

Beyond its academic focus, CommWeek also serves a critical social purpose through its Dean’s Banquet and Scholarship Awards, which raises funds to support talented students—particularly those facing financial challenges. The initiative aims to reduce educational barriers, support retention, and promote academic success.

Conference Chair, Dr. Anthony Obi Ogbo, emphasized the event’s broader impact, particularly in preparing students for leadership in a rapidly evolving media environment.

“CommWeek is where ideas, innovation, and opportunity intersect,” Ogbo said. “It is a space where we not only examine global media trends but also equip our students with the skills, perspectives, and networks needed to thrive in an increasingly digital and interconnected world.”

As one of the largest historically Black universities in the United States, TSU continues to play a significant role in training culturally responsive professionals capable of navigating both local and global communication landscapes.

CommWeek 2026 is open to students, alumni, and members of the public, with free registration available. More information and the full conference schedule can be accessed at www.soc-commweek.com.

The event further reinforces TSU’s commitment to advancing media scholarship, fostering global dialogue, and developing the next generation of communication leaders.
