“Your Performance Manifestly Disappointing”
The National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) has urged President Bola Tinubu not to seek a second term in the 2027 general election, describing his administration’s performance as “manifestly disappointing” and calling on him to focus instead on restructuring the country before the end of his tenure.
In a communiqué dated 9 July and signed by its National Chairman, Samuel Gani, the forum said the Federal Government had fallen short of Nigerians’ expectations in the areas of security, economic development and citizens’ welfare.
According to the elders, the administration’s handling of the country’s pressing challenges has failed to inspire confidence.
“The direction in which the Tinubu presidency is leading the nation offers increasing apprehension rather than hope and this state of affairs has left all patriots with no option but to call on President Tinubu to please desist from seeking re-election for a second term, but instead like a statesman with an eye on history and posterity, to earnestly commit the rest of his tenure to restructuring Nigeria and giving her a new constitution,” the communiqué reads.
The forum also renewed its opposition to the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Muslim–Muslim presidential ticket, describing the arrangement as “tone-deaf and grossly insensitive”, particularly at a time when terrorist attacks and violent killings continue across parts of the country.
It said Christians have remained victims of widespread violence and atrocities in several communities.
The NCEF further cautioned the judiciary to remain impartial in resolving election-related disputes, warning that Nigeria “is now at a tipping point” and cannot afford any perception of judicial bias.
The group also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to preserve its independence and conduct credible, free and fair elections.
On the issue of power rotation, the elders acknowledged that zoning between the North and South is not a constitutional requirement but argued that it remains vital for national unity, fairness and inclusion.
“And for that reason, patriots are urged to support a southern candidature in 2027 for the four remaining years of the south’s current turn,” the forum said.
The forum also demanded an independent investigation into the controversy surrounding the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), saying the incident exposed serious institutional failures.
“The flagrant compromise of national institutions by the current administration is reminiscent of the dark days of General Babangida’s military administration, and this is unacceptable and must be brought to the quickest halt,” the group said.
The PFIPC controversy erupted after the Presidency disowned the organisation, describing it as a non-existent government agency, despite reports that it secured a budget allocation of about ₦1.3 billion and operated from the Federal Secretariat.
President Tinubu subsequently directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the matter, while the House of Representatives also commenced a separate probe into the scandal.
The Christian elders maintained that Nigerians are yearning for genuine reforms, warning that the patience of citizens grappling with prolonged economic hardship and insecurity “must no longer be taken for granted.”
