To prevent any unforeseen breakdown of law and order during the 2026 Eid-el Maulud celebration, the Plateau State Police Command has temporarily banned the operation of commercial tricycles, popularly known as KEKE-NAPEP, in Jos and Bukuru Metropolis.
This is contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Plateau State Police Command Public Relations officer, SP Alfred Alabo.
The statement said the restriction, which takes effect on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, was aimed at preventing the use of tricycles for criminal activities, reckless driving, and other offenses often associated with large public celebrations.
It further said the measures were adopted by the command, in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders, to ensure hitch-free and peaceful celebration.
The Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, urged tricycle operators and members of the public to comply with the directive, assuring residents that security personnel would be deployed to major roads, prayer grounds, and other public places to maintain law and order before, during, and after the celebration.
The command, however, warned its personnel against using the restriction as an opportunity to extort money from tricycle operators.
CP Faniyan stated that any officer found demanding or collecting money from riders in connection with the enforcement of the ban would face disciplinary action in line with police regulations.
He also advised tricycle operators who may be apprehended not to give money to any officer demanding it but to immediately report such incidents to the command.
The police urged parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against activities capable of disrupting public peace during the Eid al-Maulud celebration.
The command reiterated that the existing ban on motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, remains in force across Jos and Bukuru Metropolis and other areas covered by the Jos Master Plan
