The University of Calabar in partnership with the Chinese government is set to commence undergraduate studies on Chinese Language, “Mandarin.”
This was disclosed by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Zana Akpagu, while signing a memorandum of understanding with Li Xuda, the cultural counselor, Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) in Nigeria.
He said the University will be among the three teaching the language in the country, and that it would deepen cooperation between Nigeria and China.
According to Professor Akpagu “Today is a very happy day for the institution as it marks the crystallization of our efforts to make sure we start the teaching of Mandarin.”
He said, “This is the third university that will be teaching Mandarin and it’s a great opportunity to deepen our cooperation with the Chinese. The Chinese government will help us with teachers as well as development of the curriculum and all we have to do is to accommodate them.”

“To further deepen the cooperation, the Chinese will reside in campus and we are already renovating the quarters because they have insisted they want to live among us”, Professor Akpagu said.
On his part, Li Xuda said they are happy to partner with UNICAL and they hope to push forward the educational exchanges through the center.
“Nigeria and China are great countries with massive culture and we should learn and improve from each other and when local people learn it, in future they will have more opportunities for their development”, he said.
