The government of Switzerland has donated an ultra-modern Personnel Resource Training Centre to the Cross River State Command of the Nigerian Immigration Service to help improve its services. This was disclosed in Calabar by Jolanda Pfister Herren, Migration Adviser, Embassy of Switzerland Abuja, during an inspection of the Centre in Cross River Command of the NIS.

She said, “We are here with two delegates from the immigration service in Switzerland to see one of our projects that we financed with  the NIS. We have a migration partnership with Nigeria since 2011 and we implement a lot of projects alongside the Swiss government and one of our partners is the NIS.”

On her overall appraisal, she said the visit to the NIS Calabar was a good meeting with the Cross River State Command of the NIS and assured that the Embassy of Switzerland we will continue to interact about the results and achievements within this project and other projects.m “We are very happy to see what we financed with you and also about the migration partnership we entered into with Nigeria and one of the fruits of this is this training centre. We will look at what is working, what is not working, where the gaps are and where we can improve so as to have a very efficient NIS”, she said.

In his response, The comptroller, Nigerian Immigration Service in the state, Okey Ezugwu said the Centre has thus far helped in training about 444 officers of the service and the training they have received has been spread over seven modules covering critical areas of immigration. He said the NIS cannot thank the Switzerland government enough for its support over the years particularly the resource Centre which has gone a long way in improving efficiency of the officers.

He said the officers of the NIS have been well trained to address the problem of refugees coming into Nigeria emphasizing that there were two camps for refugees presently and a third one will soon come on stream to cope with the rising number of refugees coming into Nigeria.
