Gov. Mr Willie Obiano of Anambra on Saturday donated 5,000 bags of rice to the athletes and officials that participated in the 2020 Nigeria Police Games in Awka.

Obiano made the donation at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, during the closing ceremony of the games.

He explained that the donation was to show hospitality to the athletes and officials following a successful conclusion of the games in the state.

“Anambra is one of the states where rice is produced and I want to thank Coscharis farms for supporting the athletes with 2000 bags of rice.

“I also want to thank Anambra rice mill in Amichi for supporting with 3000 bags of rice for the athletes. We also have over 200 Anambra manufacturers who donated their products to the athletes.

“So, every athlete and policeman that came to Anambra, over 5000 of you will have a bag of rice each and another bag containing various made in Anambra produce,” Obiano said.

According to Obiano, the facilities used for the police games will be maintained and used to nurture athletes to stardom in the state.

He said: “The facilities will be used to develop talents in sports who will bring honour to us; the facilities will be put to active use to build the sporting talents in the state.

“This games has reinforced our self belief and enriched our lives in Anambra and we shall live with the memories left behind within these seven days.

“We have reclaimed our pride of place among Nigerians and we have opened our arms wide to the world. We are now ready to take big challenges.”

He commended Anambra born transport operators like “Chisco” and “GUO” who contributed their quota to the success of the games by using their buses to convey athletes and officials to different centres of event.

NAN reports that the games which started on Feb. 27 ended on March 7 with Nigerian singers Flavour and Harrysong thrilling participants and spectators.

Force Headquarters emerged as overall champions of the game with 274 medals to dethrone last edition winners Zone 2 with 230 medals.
