Enugu State House of Assembly has charged the state ministry of health to ensure that all necessary measures are put in place to contain the spread of coronavirus in the state.

The House Committee Chairman on Health, Sam Ngene, gave this charge when the committee visited the Ministry on Wednesday in Enugu.

Ngene, lawmaker representing Enugu South Urban Constituency, said that putting all the necessary measures in place will go a long way in ensuring that the rising cases of the Covid-19 pandemic is effectively curtailed.

He then gave assurances that the seventh assembly will complement efforts of the ministry legislatively towards containment of Covid-19 in Enugu state.

One of the members of the committee, Chinedu Okwu, while commending the ministry, emphasized the need to increase the number of persons tested of coronavirus in the state as only by so doing, will the true number of infected persons be ascertained.

In his response, the commissioner of Health, Obi Ikechukwu, said that the ministry is not resting its oars until the pandemic is contained.

Obi further revealed that the state government has approved Group Life Assurance for medical workers, firefighters and State Emergency Agency, SEMA, as a motivation to those risking their lives for the good of the state.

“Special healthcare allowance for the 124 Frontline workers managing coronavirus patients has been approved by the Enugu State Governor and these Frontline workers will enjoy the allowance till the end of Covid-19 pandemic in the state,” Obi further stated.

On the choice of site for COVID-19 isolation and treatment center, the commissioner informed the lawmakers that the 221 bedded isolation and treatment centers are located in two major towns in the state, Enugu, and Nsukka.

After the meeting, the lawmakers went to inspect the level of work at the State Infectious Disease Hospital formerly known as Colliery Hospital. They expressed satisfaction at work so far.
