ENUGU — The Enugu State House of Assembly has expressed readiness to give all Executive Orders aimed at curtailing the spread of Covid-19 in the state legal backing on the resumption of plenary on Tuesday.

Jeff Mba, Chairman House Committee on Information, on Monday made this known in a telephone interview with our correspondent in Enugu.

“Giving the Executive Orders the necessary legal backing will not only strengthen the Orders but also empower the State Government to enforce them accordingly,” Mbah explained.

“The resumption of plenary tomorrow became expedient as the legislative arm intends to without delay, legalize the Executive Order; the Covid-19 must be curtailed to the barest minimum,” Mba reiterated.

Since the 9th of April, 2020, the Enugu State House of Assembly has not convened following the COVID-19 lockdown, however, the lawmakers are ready to get on with legislative matters; the passage of outstanding bills, organize public hearing without delay for good and participatory governance.

In strict observance of social distancing protocol, the lawmaker stated, “Visitors would no longer be allowed to witness the plenary sessions as before. This decision is to avoid crowded Chambers and allow enough room for social distancing, a precautionary measure to contain further spread of Covid-19”.

On the achievements so far, the House spokesman revealed, “Since the inauguration of the Seventh Assembly in June 2019, several bills have been passed, Motions adopted amongst numerous oversight functions performed. Such bills include but not limited to the Forest Guard Bill, Security Trust Fund Bill”.

“More detailed information on the Seventh Assembly’s achievements will be made public during our one year anniversary in office,” Mba asserted.

Several bills have scaled through first and second reading and many more in the offing which will be deliberated on upon resumption. I believe we will surpass our target for the year going by our track record,

Mba then assured the public that the Seventh House of Assembly will not rest its oars but will ensure that residents of the state enjoy more dividends of democracy.
