The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has ended the street-sweeping contracts of companies found to have violated the terms of agreement with Authority.
In a statement on Friday, LAWMA disclosed that an audit exercise approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu revealed sharp practices and unethical behaviours by some contractors.
Employees of the affected contractor could re-apply directly to the Authority for employment consideration, the statement read.
LAWMA also said it had restored single apparel as a uniform for all street sweepers in order to aid easy identification of genuine workers as part of its efforts to sanitise operations.
“Consequently, any sweeper or agent who wears any apparel other than the overall uniform approved will be termed an impostor and summarily dealt with according to the extant laws of the State.”
The West African Pilot News had reported that a man who claimed to be a supervisor at LAWMA had in a video posted on social media, accused the Chief Executive Officer of the waste management agency, Ibrahim Odumboni, of withholding 3-months salary and being uncompassionate to the poor. He denied the allegations, adding that contractors were responsible for street-sweepers monthly payment.
