Lagos water transportation sector has not had boat accident since the beginning of 2020, the General Manager of Lagos State Water Authority (LASWA), Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said.
Mr Emmanuel attributed the achievement to the continuous improvement in safety guidelines, regulations and enforcement in water transportation sector.
“Aside from the periodic check-ups, regular inspection of ferries plying the waterways and the removal of water hyacinth causing obstruction to smooth navigation, LASWA has also donated thousands of lift jackets to commercial boat operators and passenger in the riverine communities of Lagos to promote the use of life jackets and its safety awareness programme,” Emmanuel said.
He said the State’s waterways were monitored by LASWAS’s patrol teams which is made up of water guards and Counter-Terrorist Unit of the Nigerian Police collaborating with Marine Police.
“These efforts have resulted in a drastic reduction in Waterways incidents to the extent that no single mishap was recorded in the sector in the past six months.
“Effective safety measure are like sound health, the value of it is seldom known until it is lost,” the LASWA Boss affirmed.
