The Adekunle Ajasin University in Ondo State has reduced tuition fees of students three years after it increased it by over 300 percent.

The university said that Governor Akeredolu directed that the fees should be reduced considering the economic effect of COVID-19 on parents and students.

The move by Akeredolu is coming few weeks before he contests in an election for a second term. Governor Akeredolu had in 2018, approved the increase of tuition fees from N30,000 to N150,000 and N70,000 to N150,000. The school’s management said at the time that students could pay in installments.

In June 2020, student unions in the Ondo State, asked the Governor to reduce tuition fees and maintained that “the plight of students under the present government has increased astronomically.”

In a circular, the Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council, Mr Opeoluwa Akinfenwa, said that the Governor directed the reduction of tuition fees “in a way that quality education can still be sustained in the university.”

Details in the circular show that students in the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Social Science and Management Science who were paying N150,000 will pay N120,000.

Students in the Faculties of Agriculture and Education will pay N100,000 instead of N150,000. Faculty of Arts students will now pay N80,000 instead of N100,000. However, fees were not reduced for students in the Faculty of Law.

“All students are therefore advised to take advantage of the reduced fees by paying their school fees and registering for their courses without further delay,” Akinfenwa stated.
