Over two hundred and seventy (270) blinds, holders of Degree, NCE, Diploma, and Secondary School Certificates are among thousands of unemployed graduates in Adamawa state, Northeast Nigeria seeking employment.

The rate of street beggars particularly in the Northern parts of the country may continue to rise unless the government offers employment and provide skills to these categories of people in society.

Comrade Bitrus Richard, Chairman Nigeria Association for the Blind, Adamawa State chapter who confirmed the figure in an interview, called on the government to absorb its members into the state civil service as was done for people without disability, maintained that street begging is a threat to security and the society.

 Some criminals will hide under beggars causing trouble to the government and society at large, offering employment to the blinds will reduce the rate of street beggars among the persons with visual impairment and other forms of disability” He added.

According to him, disability should not be a hindrance to achieving ambitions by individuals, saying many of his members who are creative requires empowerment to display their talents for the benefit of the society and pleaded with the government to empower them.

He however said, Governor Fintiri had given them the assurance that special consideration will give to Blind in any employment by the government, explained that communication with concern authorities on the issue is ongoing.

 “Majority of street beggars in the state came from other states and by empowering the indigenes those that came from different states will go back to their own state of origin, he declared.

Richard while pledging to render an open door policy on trust given to the new EXCO, solicit for support and cooperation to enable him to deliver the mandate, and also call on the members to support Governor Fintiri led Administration with prayers, urging the Governor to fulfill the promise made to the Association.
