The Enugu State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed into law the Local Government Law 2020.

The new LG law 2020 incorporated both the Local Government Law Cap. 109 Revised Laws of Enugu State 2004 and four amendments to the law which includes;

The Local Government (Amendment) Law No. 5 of 2004; the Local Government Amendment) Law No. 6 of 2006; the Local Government (Amendment) Law No. 6 of 2015; The Local Government (Amendment) Law No. 1 of 2004.

These five laws mentioned above was incorporated into a bill and presented to the House for consideration and passage into law in place of the staggered five different bits of the then-existing law.

In his presentation, Iloabuchi Aniagu, Chairman Committee on Local Government, Interparliamentary and Ensiec Matters said, “this bill is apt and desirable at this moment because when passed, the provisions of these five laws mentioned above will be couched in one document as a law”.

“This will promote clear, quick and easy reference and to a large extent reduce unnecessary oversight and preventable errors,” Aniagu concluded.

Recall that the Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, Edward Ubosi on 8th of September, 2020 referred the bill to the committee on Local Government Inter-Parliamentary and ENSIEC Matters for further legislative analysis and recommendations.

The report of the committee was however presented, received, considered and scaled through third reading after which it was passed.

However, it will come into effect the day the Governor of Enugu state accents to it.
