The Statistician-General of the Federation, Dr Yemi Kale has revealed that contrary to the United Nations Statistical Commission recommendation that in every five years enumeration of formal and informal business establishments be conducted, such exercise was not carried out in Nigeria for over two decades, attributing it to lack of funding.

Kale made this known in a message at the Training of Enumerators for National Business Sample Census 2020 holding across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, said the training is to acquaint the enumerators with the rudiments of the exercise.

Represented by the Adamawa State Coordinator, National Bureau of Statistic, Mr Ayuba Ibrahim, Kale said 55 enumerators are taking part in the training in Adamawa State and charged the participants to be good Ambassadors of the state while on the field.

“With the current economic challenges brought on by COVID-19 pandemic, as the apex statistical agency in the country, we need to be at the fore in providing the government with all relevant information to assist her in taking the right policy decisions, and the exercise is a crucial part of that assignment.

“The data can be used in designing employment generation programme, boost government revenue drive by going after establishments operating under the radar”. He added

Kale explained that the exercise will involve the enumeration of formal and informal business establishments across the country, stressing that the information emanated from the census activity will provide a sound business frame for the conduct of economic surveys in the country.

Declaring the Training open at the Federal Secretariat conference hall Yola, the Executive Chairman, State Planning Commission, Dr Mary Paninga said the conduct of the census will help to increase the quantum and quality of statistics required for policy formulation, planning, monitoring and evaluation of government programmes and projects.

“The of prospects of the present administration’s reform agenda and other Sustainable Development Goals and Africa agenda twenty-sixty three can only be realized through the use of accurate data”. She said

Represented by the Adamawa State Statistician-General Mr Aloysius J. Nagarwa, Paninga described data as a veritable and effective tool that can be used for planning and development of the economy, explained that data collected will be used for planning to solve economic challenges facing the country.

“The enumerators will spend 45 days on the field conducting the exercise, while adequate arrangements have been made for effective supervision, however said local governments faced with security challenges will not be covered”.She said
