A non Governmental organization, Adamawa Women Initiative for Leadership and Development (AWILD) has called for women inclusion in decision making for the development of the state and Nigeria as a whole.

The president of the organization, Barr Jamila Babuba made the call while briefing Journalists at its office in Jimeta.

“The group is a non Governmental organization comprising women who are passionate about contributing to the development of the state as well expanding the space for more women to participate in the political process and Governance.

“Women constitute an important segment of every society, but as critical stakeholders we have not been adequately included to contribute to the Governance of the state.

“The group seeks to promote women participation in leadership, encourage women skills acquisition, entrepreneurship and collaborate with local and international organizations to serve as a voice for gender equality and social inclusion”. Babuba added

She frowns at the current low level of women in the political and Governance structures in the state which is worrisome.

Babuba noted that since the creation of Adamawa state women have been clamoring to get an increase in the number of women in leadership positions either appointive or elective.

“The National Assembly has only one female Senator while in the state assembly is also one female member representing Demsa and we have low number of women holding political offices and maybe attributed to many factors such as religious and traditional leaders”. She said

Babuba observed that lack of internal democracy in the political parties has contributed immensely to the marginalization of women in politics, adding that general poverty of which women are the worst hit is another stumbling block.

The organization president noted the group is determined to build a bridge to increase women’s contribution in governance, stressing that globally there is growing recognition of the untapped capacity of women.
