Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau has directed the reopening of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state on Oct. 30.
The governor’s directive was conveyed in a statement by Dr. Makut Macham, Director of Press and Public Affairs, on Thursday in Jos.
Lalong said the directive followed the government’s engagement with all critical stakeholders to set up mechanisms for observing COVID-19 protocols in all schools in the state.
The governor said schools were to resume academic activities for the third term and ensure full compliance to the guidelines issued by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 for the safety of students and teachers.
He said various training and engagements had been held for the orientation of school principals and teachers on basic operational requirements.
The governor also directed management of schools to clean, fumigate and re-arrange school environments in preparation for the resumption.
According to Lalong, all grade six students are to resume school between Oct. 19 and Oct. 23 to prepare for the First School Leaving Certificate and the National Common Entrance Examinations.
He advised all heads of public and private schools with huge populations, to consider spacing out arrangements of school attendance, to avoid going against COVID-19 protocols relating to social distancing.
Lalong also directed that all exchange students who had arrived from other states should be accommodated pending the resumption date.
He assured the people that arrangements were ongoing to facilitate the resumption of tertiary institutions in the state.
