The Controller, Federal Ministry of Environment Yola Field Office, Adamawa State Hajiya Safiya Mohammed Abubakar has called for concerted efforts to mitigate the impact of natural disasters on the environment.
Abubakar in an interview with newsmen noted that the effects of natural disasters such as flood and fire disaster are enormous; pointing out that human activity could mitigate impact of such disasters on humans and the environment.
“People should engage in environment friendly activities, proper waste management, planting of trees and clearing of drainages are preventive measures that protect the environment”. She said
Abubakar stressed the need for stakeholders to create awareness among the people so as to safeguard the environment.
“National Orientation Agency, the Ministry of Environment as well as the state Urban Planning and Development Authority should embark on periodic awareness campaigns on the effects of human activities on the environment”. She added
She urged state governments to key into the initiatives of the Federal Government in protecting the environment.
