The Judicial Panel of Inquiry calls on interested members of the public to submit Memoranda on cases of police brutality and extra judicial killings within Enugu State not later than Friday, November 20th, 2020.

The Memoranda should be in twelve hard copies of A4 size paper with double spacing and addressed to The Secretary, Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality and Extra Judicial Killings; C/o Enugu State Judiciary Headquarters, Old High Court (3), Enugu.

A statement signed by the Secretary of the panel, Onochiengwu Obuna, stated that the memoranda can be submitted to the Registrars at the Zonal Judiciary Offices at any of the nine listed courts: Nsukka High Court; Ogbede High Court; Obollo Afor High Court; Oji River High Court; Ezeagu High Court; Udi High Court; Awgu High Court; Agbani High Court; Enugu Ezike High Court”.

Obuna further disclosed that the Panel will also hold public sittings inside the Old High Court 3 at the Enugu State Judiciary Headquarters on dates to be announced later.

The Secretary then reassured the residents of the state that the Enugu State Government will be thorough, firm and decisive in implementing the report and recommendations of the Judicial Panel of Enquiry; “the report should be submitted within six (6) months from the date of inauguration of the panel.

Obuna further called on interested persons to submit a soft copy of the memorandum via E-mail to panelonpolicebrutality042@gmail.com.

“For further enquiries, call or send text messages to the Secretariat of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry on any of the following numbers: 08034272867, 08033062359, 08037722569 and 08036767229 between the hours of 8am -4pm on weekdays”.

Recall that on Wednesday, 21st October, 2020, the Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, inaugurated the Judicial Panel of Inquiry to receive complaints of police brutality and extra judicial killings within Enugu State; Justice Kingsley Ngwu Udeh (Rtd) is Chairman of the panel.

The Judicial panel of inquiry are to receive and investigate complaints of Police brutality or related extra judicial killings; evaluate evidence presented/other surrounding circumstances and draw conclusions as to the validity of the complaint(s); and recommend compensation and other remedial measures, where appropriate.
