Survivors of spinal cord injuries in Adamawa State have appealed to the state government to consider their plight in the areas of education, health, and employment among others.
Malam Sanusi Adamu, Adamawa State Chairman of the Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria, made the plea during the election of new state officials of the association held at the Government Skill Acquisition Center Jimeta.
He urged the government to assist members of the association considering their peculiar conditions and needs.
“Spinal cord injury survivors in the state are among stigmatized persons and therefore deserved special attention.
“The spinal cord injuries association is collaborating with the National Association of People Living with Disability in the state for the attainment of set goals”. He said.
Adamu called on spinal cord injuries survivors in the twenty-one local governments to come forward and register with the association as this is done free of charge, adding that so far, twenty-nine members are registered in Adamawa.
Speaking at the event, the chairman of the Nigeria Association of the Blind in Adamawa state, Mr. Bitrus Richard called on members of the Spinal Cord Injuries Association to support their new leaders and always channel their grievances through appropriate authority.
In a remark, the women leader of the association Mrs. Rifkatu Livinus said women are the bedrock of the society and appealed to the state government to upgrade the special education center, Jada to offer courses at the Diploma level to enable members of the association to further their education.
Meanwhile, new State officials of the association have been elected, the are Sanusi Adamu Chairman, Ismaila Bello, Vice Chairman I and Mohammed Dalhatu Vice-chairman II with Maxwell Bitrus Secretary-General, Yahya Jeleng Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Usman Auditor, and Mrs. Refkatu Livinus, Women leader.
