Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has commissioned Solar Power projects in Adamawa worth over four billion naira (N4b) which are being funded by the European Union, EU and implemented by the Department for International Development DFID.

The projects cover the 78 watts solar scheme each in Maiha and Gulak Cottage Hospitals, ten watts each in Garkida, Michika and Mubi General Hospitals, 28 watts for the in College of Health Technology, Mubi, as well as 36 watts for Michika Maternity Hospital and  36 watts for the Ga`anda Primary Health Care centre.

Speaking at the event held at College of Health Technology Mubi Governor Fintiri noted that provision of power infrastructure is central to recovery effort in areas devastated by the insurgency.

“Solar power systems if correctly installed and well maintained, can last for up to twenty years thus providing a lasting, dependable and sustainable energy solution.

“I commend DFID, EU and the Federal Ministry of Power for the intervention which will go a long way in boosting the provision of efficient Health services in the benefiting areas”. Fintiri said

In his address, Nigeria Minister of Power, Engineer Sale Mamman said more than 40 New Mini-Grid projects have been commissioned across the country providing reliable power supply to over 40,000 people in Off-Grid areas.

“The Ministry of power will also provide five million (5m) households with solar home systems under the Nigeria Economic Sustainability Plan which is aimed at increasing electricity access and reducing the effect of the covid-19 and Development.

In his remark, Adamawa State Commissioner for Works and Energy Development, Alhaji Adamu Atiku Abubakar said the project is aimed at providing Solar Power facility to enhance Healthcare delivery services along with Education Institutions.

“To ensure the sustainability and optimal use of the solar facilities, the Energy Development Department carefully selected and trained two Technical Personnel, three staff of the Ministry and one Health Personnel on system operation, monitoring health and safety requirements of each of the Solar facilities”. He said

On his part, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Prof Abdullahi Isa observed that lack of power has been the hindrance to development and requested that the remaining nine secondary healthcare centres to also benefit from the solar power.

Also speaking, the Representative of EU Mr Tinyan Ogiehor urged the state government to put in place mechanisms for maintaining the solar power system for lasting and optimum benefit to the people.
