The Enugu State House of Assembly on Tuesday set up a special committee to investigate the land dispute between Umuchigbo and Amorji-Nike communities both in Enugu East Local Government Area in the state.

The committee headed by Ibenaku Onoh is to investigate the land dispute which has lasted for more than ten years.

On resumption of plenary for the year 2021, the House received a petition from Umuchigbo community accusing Amorji-Nike of encroaching into their land.

Presenting the petition, Hillary Ugwu member representing Enugu East Rural Constituency revealed that all attempts to settle the land dispute between these two communities had been futile as both parties have refused to agree on a common boundary.

Hence, the Umuchigbo community via this petition calls on the House of Assembly to invite necessary government agency to resolve the land matter peacefully to avoid bloodshed as well as breakdown of law and order in the area.

In his contribution, Jeff Mbah member representing Oji River Constituency asserted that the 1999 constitution empowers legislators to intervene in land dispute between communities within a state.

He however advised the special committee to ensure that the Deputy Chairman Enugu East Local Government Area be involved during the investigation process.

In his remark, the Speaker of the House, Edward Ubosi, directed the committee to submit their findings within one month to enable the House determine next line of action in settling the land dispute amicably.

Worthy of note is that Edward Ubosi Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly is a native of Umuchigbo community while Gilbert Nnaji is from Amorji-Nike; Gil Nnaji was a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and represented Enugu East senatorial district at the National Assembly.
