YOLA — The Chairman/Chief Executive, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retrd) says about four million women use hard drugs in Nigeria, out of the number, one million are already addicted to drugs and drug abuse.

Marwa disclosed this in Yola when the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Adamawa state chapter paid him a courtesy call.

He expressed concern over the daily rising cases of drug addiction especially among young people in the country; maintaining that all hands must be on deck to fight the menace.

“The rising cases of drug abuse are due to idleness and poverty, young people should engage in meaningful ventures as the government of President Buhari has promised to create one hundred thousand (100,000) jobs for Nigerians.

“Family settings is one of the key strategies to curtail the menace of drug abuse, children should be guided on the dangers associated with drug abuse, parents should give their children proper upbringing for them to be useful in the society”, he added.

Marwa called on women Journalists to support NDLEA in the fight against drug abuse in the state, Northeast and Nigeria at large, explained that his office will partner with Journalists to educate the public on the ills associated with drug abuse.

Earlier, Adamawa State Coordinator of NAWOJ Hajiya Zainab Abubakar said the Association will soon embark on sensitization and advocacy on dangers associated with drug abuse across the Northeast.

While congratulating him over the appointment, pledge the association’s resolve to partner with the agency in the fight against illicit drugs in society.

In her remark, the zonal Vice President of the Association, Mrs. Dorcas Philemon was optimistic that the issue of drug abuse will soon become a thing of the past in Nigeria based on the track records of Marwa.
