Deposed Emir of Kano, Mallam Muhammad Sanusi II, has been appointed as the leader of the Tijjaniyya Sufi order in Nigeria.

The appointment was announced at the annual event marking the birthday of the sect’s leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass, held in Sokoto State Saturday.

Since the death of Sheikh Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu in 2018, the sect has not appointed any leader.

The ceremony was attended by the governors of Sokoto and Zamfara, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Bello Matawalle, and a prominent leader of the sect, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, among other dignitaries.

Adherents of Tijjianiyya who were in their thousands offered special prayers for peace, unity, and stability in the country.

The prayer session was led by Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi and leader of  Majma’u Ahbab Rasul Li Shehu Nyass, Alhaji Dahiru Abubakar.

The two scholars prayed the Almighty Allah to bring to end banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities in the country.

Abubakar said the event was organized to honour Sheikh Nyass, who dedicated all his life to the services of Islam.

“Nyass  lived an exemplary life filled with fear of God and noble character.

“The essence of the celebration is to further cement the existing mutual relationship of the adherents of Sheikh Ahmadu Tijjani all over the world, to immortalize and commemorate the legacy and teachings of the Sheikh and to pray for peaceful coexistence of the entire nation”,  He said.

Sanusi succeeded late Isyaka Rabi’u who was appointed after the death of first Khalifa of Tijjaniyya in Nigeria Emir Muhammad Sanusi l.

The appointment of late Isyaka Rabi’u has split Tijjaniyya sects where some clerics loyal to Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi protested against the appointment.

The emergence of Emir Sanusi ll as Khalifa has brought to an end the decades-old rivalry among the followers of the Tijjaniyya sect in Nigeria.
