Residents of Etudo/Awkunanaw Street in Achara Layout, Enugu South Local Government Area will soon heave a sigh of relief as this long stretched all-important road finally receives the attention of the Enugu State Government.

Disclosing this on Friday, the Enugu State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji, said, “The Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has directed the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to commence immediate procurement for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Etudo/Awkunanaw Street, Achara Layout, Enugu South Local Government Area, as one of the special intervention projects for urgent attention, in the 2021 budget deliverables.”

Engr. Nnaji disclosed this shortly after Gov. Ugwuanyi’s unscheduled visit to the site to ascertain the true state of the road.

He also revealed that the state government has commenced the bi-annual repairs of roads that are in bad shape in the state, in line with its zero-tolerance for potholes.

“For the past two weeks, a team of engineers divided into seven groups, have been on the ground rehabilitating, repairing, and making sure that we have roads that are good for passages; there are on-going repairs now at Achara Layout, Trans Ekulu, Ogui Road, New Market, among others,” Nnaji said.

But the Special Adviser of the government on Information, Barr Steve Oruruo has frowned at the incessant disposal of wastes in drainages and waterways in the street.

He observed during the inspection of the Etudo/Awkunanaw street that the gutters have become a refuse dumping ground which can result to flooding and affects the longevity of the road even after reconstruction.

Oruruo then advised residents of the area to desist from such acts that are inimical to development hence frustrating government efforts.

Appreciating the state government’s efforts in the reconstruction and maintenance of existing roads, the Deputy Leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly and member representing Enugu South (Rural) Constituency, Mrs. Onyinye Ugwu thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for his humility, accessibility, and utmost concern for the wellbeing of the people.

The lawmaker equally commended the governor’s consistency and steadfastness in visiting sites across the state to ascertain their state for proper assessment and effective service delivery.

Recall that over forty-two billion naira was allotted to works and infrastructure in the Enugu State Y2021 approved budget; this is a 7.27% increase from the Y2020 Revised budget.
