Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has diminished the rumour about Buhari’s health, saying reports that the President is dead and was replaced by a certain Jubril from Sudan is untrue.

Obasanjo made this clarification while speaking at a youth mentorship session in Ogun on Sunday.

According to him, rumours are often peddled online and used to abuse social media.

“It’s ridiculous to the extreme. But you have it in social media and you see people believing it. Social media have done good but it can be abused and misused,” he said.

Obasanjo recounted how he once had to correct the narrative after someone walked up to him to inquire about the validity of the report about Buhari’s death.

“Somebody came to me, in very high hope, and said, ‘this talk about Buhari not being Buhari…’. I said, ‘do you believe this?’ He said, ‘well, it is in the social media. I said ‘Buhari died and we will not know that Buhari has died? And they will bring us, somebody, from Sudan to be Buhari?” He recalled.

Meanwhile, President Buhari has personally debunked his rumored death.

In March 2018, at a town hall session with Nigerians in Poland, Buhari told the audience he was the real president.

“It’s the real me, I assure you. I will soon celebrate my 76th birthday and I will still go strong.

“A lot of people hoped that I died during my ill-health. Some even reached out to the vice-president to consider them to be his deputy because they assumed I was dead,” the president had said

He indicated that the rumour was most likely peddled by people who “hoped” he died during a bout of illness.
