LAGOS — A bill prohibiting the media parade of suspects by the Lagos police command has been passed by the state assembly.

The bill was passed during the Monday sitting, presided by the deputy speaker, Wasiu Eshilokun-Sanni.

The bill is an amendment of the Lagos State Criminal Justice Law and if assented will end the media parade of suspects in Lagos.

Section 9(a) of the bill says, “of the newly passed bill, “as from the commencement of this law, the police shall refrain from parading any suspect before the media.”

The bill also dictates that citizens should not be given inhumane treatment of any kind but be accorded the right to dignity of person.

The bill also dictates that the only condition where the police can arrest without a warrant is if a person is reasonably suspected to illegally be in possession of firearms or other such dangerous instruments.

It stipulates that arrested persons must be granted reasonable facilities for obtaining legal advice, bail or making arrangements for defence or release.
