ENUGU — The newly appointed Chairman of the Local Government Services Commission, Professor Osy Okanya has revealed his intentions to address the non-commitment of Local Government staff to work.

Okanya while answering a question posed by a member of Enugu State House of Assembly during screening for confirmation of his appointment revealed, “In most LG across the state, the support service that ought to strengthen the system seems not to be there particularly in the area of attendance to work,”

“By the middle of the month, hardly do you find the support staff in the office; they do not provide services to the political leaders or to the community they swore to serve.”

Okanya further opined that Local Government is allowed to take its own autonomous decision without interference from other levels of government.

“The LG autonomy I subscribe to is autonomy to the extent that they are allowed limited interference in decision making;

“Let’s try LG autonomy and if it fails, various legislative houses at state and Federal level will adjust the level of autonomy allowed this lower tier of government.”

Other members of the LGSC screened and confirmed by members of the House include Roderick Ugwu, Nnaji Peter Nnaji, Mrs. Florence Ifeyinwa Igboji, and Eugene Odo.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Civil Service Commission members have also been screened and confirmed.

The new Chairman of the Civil Service Commission is Robinson Ogbonnaya Odo. Other members of the Commission include Dr. Mrs. Eucharia Offor, Mr. Anike Nathaniel Chidiebere, Mrs. Joy Chinenye Odike and Mrs. Stella Akpa Ekweremmadu, wife of the former Chief Whip, late Chief Matthias Ekweremadu Jnr.

The appointments of the members of both commissions were communicated to the members of Enugu State House of Assembly by the Secretary to the Enugu State Governor, Professor Simon Ortuanya.

The nominees were invited to the Chambers for screening and confirmation pursuant to section 198 of the 1999 constitution of Nigeria (amended) and section 4 of the Enugu State Commission amendment law, No 3 laws of Enugu State, 2015.

Resolving to the Committee of the Whole, the House members screened, approved, and confirmed members of both commissions; Local Government Service Commission and State Civil Service Commission.
