ENUGU — The Enugu State Government has refuted the news trending on social media that one Tochukwu Okeke, a Senior Special Assistant, SSA, to the Governor on Security was arrested by the Nigerian Army.

In a public service announcement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Nnanyelugo Aroh, the state government denies working with any Tochukwu Okeke as SSA on security.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state categorically that the state government has not designated any person, whosoever, as Special Adviser, Senior Special Assistant or Special Assistant to the Governor on security”.

“In view of the above, the good people of Enugu State are encouraged to continue to support the various Security Agencies in the State, including the provision of useful information on the activities of criminal elements, as the State Government will handsomely reward any person who provides useful information on the activities of these criminal elements terrorizing our society and interfering with the much-treasured peace in Enugu State”.

The disclaimer was announced same day Judge Stephen Pam set to hear the case against Tochukwu Okeke; “In a certified true copy of the order, seen by our correspondent, the judge adjourned the suit marked, FHC/PH/FHR/203/2021, till August 17, 2021, for hearing”.

The trending story:

According to the supporting affidavit attached to the motion, Mr. Tochukwu Okeke was arrested by officers of the respondents for allegedly belonging to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (Premium Times).

Okeke was whisked away by Military men on his way home from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport; he has been in the military’s custody since Monday, July 5, 2021.

However, Okeke’s lawyer, Chinedum Agwaramgbo, filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit for the release of his client imprisoned by the 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu; hence the court orders the Army to produce Mr. Okeke and show cause why he will not be released on bail.

The respondents’ ignoring the court order as they neither filed any response nor put up a legal representation, necessitated the judge, Stephen Pam, to make interlocutory order for the unconditional release of Mr. Okeke which is yet to be obeyed.

The Nigerian Army, the Chief of Army Staff, Farouk Yahaya, and the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Mechanised Division Enugu, Taoreek Lagbaja, are the 1st and the 3rd respondents in the suit.
