ABUJA — As part of measures to surmount security challenges bedeviling the country, the Nigerian Army is now holding meetings with retired military officers across the six geopolitical zones of the country to find a lasting solution to the problem.
Speaking during the Northeast interactive session which took place at the Officers Mess, 23rd Armoured Brigade Yola, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Lucky Irabor urged the participants to be open and frank in relaying the true security challenges confronting the Northeast sub-region.
“The region has been grappling with more than a decade of insurgency leading to the deaths of thousands of people and the displacement of millions of others. The re-union with old colleagues and their informed intervention will inject fresh ideas into the fight against Boko Haram insurgency bedeviling the region,” Irabor said.
Irabor who described them as men of honour and unquestionable integrity who have given their best in service to their motherland, expressed optimism that the retired officers will bring inputs that will add substantial value in the war against insurgency.
He urged them to tell the Army its observable lapses in the war against the insurgency for change of strategies and point out aspects in which the military is doing well for improvement.
“Be forward in telling the Army all your perceptions and proffer ways forward for a lasting solution to the insecurity as you are in the best position to understand the security dynamics of the region,” Irabor.
In a remark, the Brigade Commander 23 Armoured Brigade Yola, Brigadier General Aminu Garba who represented the GOC 3 Division Jos, Major General A.I Sani said, the interaction was apt and timely and thanked the CDS for organizing the event in Yola.
“The Army will surely benefit from the wealth of experience of the retired officers to address the raging insecurity bedeviling the region.”
“The Army needs a variety of inputs to be able to resolve the lingering insecurity adding that one area where they could get such veritable inputs is from the retired officers,” Garba noted.
