Spotlight has been on Dr. Victor Chukwuemeka Nnam, ex-commissioner for lands in Enugu state who resigned amidst invitation and expectations of Enugu State House of Assembly members waiting for a counter publication of malicious accusations attributed to him against them.

The battle between the lawmakers and Nnam started when the later ignored the former’s invitation of the ad hoc committee set up to gather information on cases of multiple taxation and levies in the state which inadvertently affects the ease of doing business and development in the state.

The ex-commissioner’s three times refusal to appear before the ad hoc committee generated a lot of negative waves; he later appeared before the lawmakers at the hallowed chambers, apologized, and was asked by Speaker Edward Ubosi to go back to the committee and render the information needed as regards revenue and taxation chats of the Ministry of Lands amongst others.  And rather than complying with the Speaker’s instruction, news of the Enugu land boss filled the media raising questions in the minds of the people.

The reason cited by Nnam bordered on integrity; removal of his professional Heads of Departments, HODs, on punitive grounds and rejection of his proposal for the establishment of a GIS land administration system which would have enabled the Ministry to stamp out land grabbers and create investors’ confidence in land system. Could there be just more to the saga between the state government, lawmakers, and the ex-commissioner? There must be more to this saga than meets the eyes.

Just barely two weeks after Nnam’s resignation as a Commissioner of Lands, a notice of violation was issued against him over his building at Diamond city estate, in Enugu North Local Government Area, Enugu.  The violation description from the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, ECTDA, states two offences- Violating the stop work and Building without ECTDA approval.  The duplex in question lies beside properties allegedly owned by the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly.

The ECTDA red mark on the said building dated 9th November 2021, ECTDA/DC/IS/ 001 mandating owner to remove within 14 days was appalling in the sight of residents as similar scenario in the past had seen resources razed down in a twinkling of an eye in the state.

Many took to social media to register their displeasure on the move of the state government against the embattled ex-commissioner; they view this horrendous move as a tyrant flycatcher way.

Success Obum registering his displeasure said, “This government in Enugu state, will always allow people to laugh at them, and their ways of chasing shadow; a laughable government, with zero mission and vision. They will never tell you the real info behind their action. I don’t know who is advising the Governor of Enugu state, but that person will definitely land him into a very big mess, it may not come now, but after 2023”.

“There are some things that need more of your attention in Enugu than Victor Nnam e.g Potholes, pensions, infrastructures, Enugu neatness, our security, etc,” Obum said.

Also another resident, Chime Onyekachi pissed by the tyrannical move mocked the slogan of the state governor saying, “If Enugu is in hand of God…states in the USA will now be in hands of who…most times the government get it wrong by doing irrelevance over priority…if the governor knows he’s clean why come after the resigned commissioner?…how many days does the governor have to leave office…nothing to show rather than witch-hunting using capital territory development authority claiming that he’s not aware of most of their evils.”

Another aggrieved person blamed the governor for the misgivings stating that the masses entrusted the office in his hands not his advisers.

Chime Ifeanyi Justice said, “I wouldn’t even blame the persons advising him because we never voted for those persons, we gave him our trust to in turn choose people of like minds that will help him run the state well and I am certain that not every proposal that comes to his table is what he approves of, so if he thinks that the demolishment is something fit to be done under his watch, then he is to be blamed for a failed decision again…”

Justice further stated, “There are so many places we need the Hand of God in Enugu and not on Victor Nnam’s building but we are yet to see the Hands of God in such places…Indeed this administration can now be approved to be used as an example in primary schools when pupils are being thought about a failed administration.”
